St. Francis High pitcher Michael Strem threw a perfect game in the Lancers’ playoff opener against Monta Vista last week.

In last week’s Central Coast Section Division I playoff opener, Michael Strem pitched the first perfect game in St. Francis High baseball history. Now he wants to help the Lancers accomplish something they haven’t done in recent history.

It’s been 12 years since St. Francis last won a section title.

Tianna Vasquez had two hits in Los Altos High’s CCS quarterfinal win Saturday.

The Los Altos High softball team scored more than enough runs to win Saturday’s Central Coast Section Division II quarterfinal game, blanking Saratoga 6-0 at PAL Stadium in San Jose.

But the Eagles produced only six hits, and coach Tom Barrera indicated that probably wouldn’t be enough to win today’s semifinal contest.

Melissa Seaman was one of four St. Francis gymnasts to win an event at the CCS meet.

The St. Francis High gymnastics team didn’t quite reach its goal of posting the best score in school history at the Central Coast Section championships, but the Lancers did forge new ground in winning the meet.

Although St. Francis has captured all four individual events at CCS before, last week marked the first time a different member of the team won each of them. Kelsey Celaya claimed the vault, Abby Purnell won the uneven bars, Tessa Divita finished first on the balance beam and Melissa Seaman took home top honors on the floor exercise May 15 at Gymtowne in South San Francisco.

No local girl had a better day at the Central Coast Section track and field semifinals than Gunn High’s Sarah Robinson. The Los Altos Hills resident won the 3,200-meter run and placed second in the 1,600 race Saturday at Gilroy High.

Robinson ran the 3,200 in 10 minutes, 45.54 seconds – nearly two seconds ahead of runner-up Danielle Katz of Los Gatos – and placed roughly one second behind San Lorenzo Valley’s Anna Maxwell in the 1,600 with a time of 4:55.10.

Los Altos tennis players Spencer Simonides, left, and Anthony Bello flank coach Bill Wong after they won the CCS doubles title.

Height is not only helpful in basketball, but also in tennis – as Los Altos High’s Anthony Bello and Spencer Simonides proved last week.

The 6-foot-4 Bello and 6-5 Simonides used their superior size to repeat as Central Coast Section doubles champs.
