The Town Crier's comical choice of a July 29 cover story ("What's bugging you?") has startled me out of my inertia and impelled me to do something I never do, write a letter to the editor. Years have passed since "Silent Spring," the book about the environment by Rachel Carson, sounded the alarm. It takes a while to wake up to the fact that individually we are all responsible for the health of our planet, but now it is past time.

According to the Aug. 29, 1973, issue of the Town Crier, the aroma of freshly baked cookies on Pine Lane in Los Altos signaled the opening of a new day care center for seniors at Pilgrim Haven retirement home. Open at that time to all Los Altos residents 65 years or older who were able to care for themselves, it was designed to provide sociability with activities such as baking, bridge, picnics, arts and crafts.

Eagan and company awarded Linda Meier, community volunteer extraordinaire, the 1998 Tiffany Award in recognition of her dedicated volunteer leadership at the Peninsula Community Foundation and Stanford Medical Center to name just a few of the eight (yes-count 'em, EIGHT) boards that Linda serves on.
