Town Crier Staff Report

Victoria Mukai, a former teacher at Almond School in Los Altos, is currently enjoying her first year of retirement after 37 years with the school.

"It's like an extended summer vacation at this point," she said last week.

Mukai, who retired last year, said she already misses teaching.

"I think about the wonderful staff, and the students and parents," she said. "It was the greatest experience I ever had."

Parents, teachers, administrators and former students honored Mukai at a retirement reception last November. Approximately 75 colleagues attended the affair, hosted by Almond parents Cathy Ashton, Betsy Ross, Vicki Norman and Susan Lewin. Speaking Mukai's praises were Almond principal Linda Eckols, Mukai's eighth principal, and Dick Liewer, assistant superintendent for the Los Altos School District.

Former students Derek Fletcher and Chris Dralla recited a poem in Mukai's honor, while students from her last fifth grade class presented her with a Waterford crystal vase.
