Two women came into Bank of the West on Third Street in Los Altos about 1:45 p.m. on Jan. 28. After the transactions, bank personnel became suspicious of the checks and called bank corporate headquarters, said Los Altos Police Sgt. Bob Lacey. The checks turned out to be stolen from a business in Hayward. In the meantime, the two women left the bank and headed to a Bank of the West branch in Santa Clara. Once the bank staff learned the checks were stolen, they alerted other branches. "The bank staff was doing its homework," Lacey said. When the two suspects came into a Santa Clara branch of Bank of the West, the staff called the police. The Santa Clara police arrested three and called in the Los Altos police, too. The suspects arrested on forgery charges are Ayanna Wright, a 25-year-old woman from San Francisco; Myisha Alverez, a 21-year-old woman from Oakland; and Fredy Tuck, a 35-year-old man from Oakland. "The two women passed the checks in Los Altos," Lacey said. And Tuck drove the car. The total loss to the bank was about $31,000, Lacey said. Management at Bank of the West declined to comment. |
