In The Past...

50 years ago in the Los Altos NewsAccording to the March 21, 1946 issue of the Los Altos News, the county planning commission was debating whether John H. Lyon, a private citizen, should be allowed to have a hangar and a landing strip as part of his home property.Lyon applied for permission to build accommodations for his four-passenger plane on property between the Southern Pacific right-of-way and Granger Avenue, south of Grant Road. He had purchased the strip of land, 120 feet wide by 2,241 feet long, with plans to build a $25,000 house, a combined garage and hangar and a landing strip, subject to the commission's approval. The local Business Association took a positive step in securing a community center for Los Altos when it approved a delegation to investigate the possibilities. It was hoped financial aid for the project would come from a cities and county bill from which unincorporated areas could obtain financing, based on the 1940 census at $8.50 per capita. Unfortunately, no one in the county knew the population of Los Altos in 1940 or 1946, nor did anyone seem to know where Los Altos began and where it ended. Shocked by the appalling number of deaths caused by preventable accidents, the local Parent-Teachers' Association voted at its March 1946 meeting to sponsor a safety campaign to make the community safety-conscience. Both the town Council and the Business Association voted to support the campaign. Researched by Ellen Shaw for the Los Altos History House Association

PinewoodChristy Eustice's Panthers, who have struggled in league play the last couple years, are looking to surprise some people this time out. And they started off on a good note at the recent Crusader Classic tournament in Modesto. Pinewood finished 2-1, compiling victories over Valley Dublin (6-1) and Valley Christian-San Jose (12-10); its only loss was to Modesto Christian in the semifinals. At the tourney, basketball star Kacey Scheppler provided strong pitching, and Liz Oliver, Andrea Hajjarian and Scheppler hit the ball well for the Panthers.Scheppler, who starred for Sacred Heart Prep last season, uses her three-point hoops strength on the mound with an array of pitches: changeup, drop, rise and curve. At the No. 2 spot is senior co-captain Kari Burnett, who doubles as an outfielder.Backing up the pitching duo in the infield are catcher Emily Amanatullah, first baseman Hajjarian, second baseman Charlotte Vallaeys, shortstop and co-captain Oliver and third baseman Ali Harvey. Eustice noted that Amanatullah has a good bat, Harvey has a lot of softball experience and the speedy Oliver is an excellent offensive and defensive player and team leader. Another important player is senior Jill Shapiro, a fine athlete who will play center field and infield. With its short-game offense lots of bunts and steals and strong defense, Eustice hopes Pinewood will finish near the top of the Private Schools Athletic League standings. And the girls proved this is possible by beating defending champion Valley Dublin again last Friday in their league opener. In the 5-2 triumph, Scheppler got the win and Amanatullah and Oliver had three hits and two RBIs apiece.

Prep track and field

Los AltosIn last Thursday's action, Los Altos' boys knocked off Los Gatos 65-62, in what Coach Todd Wangsness feels is a huge upset. "We lost a lot of graduates including the Nord twins and I figured we'd go 3-3, optimistically thinking. I thought Los Gatos and Gunn would be untouchable," he said. One down and one to go.Leading Los Altos (2-0), which took 44 out of 45 points in the field events, were seniors Willie Howard (shot put and discus) and Ricardo Alvarez (sprinter) and sophomore Darren Marble (high jumper). Howard notched a 160 in the discus 16 feet further than his previous best and a 53-9 in the shot put; Alvarez registered two important second-place finishes in the 100 and 200; and Marble won the high jump with a 6-3 leap, which was almost a foot higher than last year's mark. Howard also swept the shot put and discus competitions at the K-Bell."(Marble) worked hard in the off-season and shows inspiration and determination," Wangsness said.Other important Eagles are Bryce De la Fosse (long jump), Pete Bjorklund (shot put, discus), Kregg Quarles (triple jump) and Andrew Hill (one- and two-miler).On the Los Gatos win, Wangsness said: "It was a team victory and we got a lot of important seconds and thirds. We rose to the occasion."And the Los Altos girls who feature a combination of upper- and lower-classwomen made it a double victory Thursday with a 69-58 decision over Los Gatos.Notching firsts for the Eagles were Jessica Burnham (long jump, 16-9; triple jump, 36-5), Joy De Amero (shot put, 33-1/2; discus, 114-11), Becca Saenz (100 hurdles, 16.5; 300 hurdles, 53.1) and Stephanie Downey (high jump, 4-10). At the K-Bell meet, De Amero led the discus field with a 112-10 mark. Also giving Los Altos important points were Anne Rippetoe, who "mentally conquered" the 400 and 800 runs with second places; and Adrienne Hypolite, who notched a pair of seconds in the 100 and 200 sprints.
