At times, many of us take police officers, sheriff’s deputies and firefighters for granted. But those who have been helped by them – whether they’re performing CPR in a medical emergency or breaking up a potentially violent confrontation – know they can mean the difference between life and death.
Medical building design change recommended
The proposed design for the new Palo Alto Medical Foundation plastic surgery center on Altos Oaks Drive in Los Altos needs a major facelift.
Members of the Los Altos Planning Commission Thursday agreed with residents that the design for the new two-story medical office building proposed for 715 Altos Oaks Drive does not conform with the residential look of the neighborhood and requires revision. Commissioners and foundation representatives are scheduled to address and modify design elements at a joint study session at a later date.
Serving youth
There’s a youth movement afoot at Los Altos High, where the girls volleyball team is the youngest Jason Kennedy has coached in his four years at the school.

TC publishers to be honored as CSA "Hometown Heroes"
The Community Services Agency’s Hometown Heroes Recognition Breakfast, scheduled 7:30-9 a.m. Sept. 17 at the Crowne Plaza Cabaña in Palo Alto, will honor community contributors Paul and Liz Nyberg and the Los Altos Community Foundation.
The featured speaker is Richard Henning, founder of the Celebrity Forum Speaker Series at Foothill College.

Fresh produce generates funds for schools
While an influx of traffic typically characterizes the end of the school day on most campuses, not everyone in the Tuesday carpool line at Bubb Elementary School in Mountain View is there just to pick up a student. In fact, many queue up to do a bit of shopping.
Each week, Peter Trembois – Farmer Pete to his regulars – sets up a mini farmers’ market at six schools in Los Altos and Mountain View as part of his Community Sustainable Agriculture program.

Stanford University invites community to programs featuring Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama is scheduled to lead a series of programs, “Compassion, Science, & Society,” Oct. 14 and 15 at Stanford University.
It will be the Buddhist monk’s third visit to Stanford – earlier visits occurred in 1994 and 2005. All scheduled events will be broadcast live over the Internet.
